George Allen (football)

George Herbert Allen (April 29, 1918 - December 31, 1990) was an American football coach in the NFL. His son George is a current U.S. Senator from Virginia.

He coached the Los Angeles Rams from 1966 to 1970, and the Washington Redskins from 1971 to 1977. He coached the Redskins to Super Bowl VII, where they lost to the Miami Dolphins.

He had an obsessive dislike for the city of New York and twice deliberately ran up the score late in games against the New York Giants, in 1966 and again in 1972, when he stopped the clock to try for another touchdown in the closing seconds of the game (and succeeded). In 1976, when the Giants upset the Redskins in a game which they entered with an 0-10 record, several veteran Giants players pointed to smoldering resentment over the 1972 incident as a factor that motivated them to pull off the upset, which ended up costing the Redskins first place in their division that year (although they did qualify for thr playoffs as a wild card). Indeed, the hatred many New Yorkers felt for Allen was so intense that when it was announced on Monday Night Football on December 31, 1990 that Allen had died, newspapers reported that many fans assembled in New York-area sports bars actually cheered upon hearing the announcement.

He had the distinction of never coaching a team to a losing season. This was particularly notable in the case of the Redskins, which before he arrived scored only one winning season from 15. However, only once did his teams ever progress beyond the first round of the playoffs (the Redskins in 1972), and many cited as a reason for this Allen's penchant for trading away draft choices for seasoned veterans, leaving his teams with an aging roster that was physically exhausted by the time the playoffs rolled around.

He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
