Grassroots Party
The Grassroots Party of Minnesota was created in the 1980's to oppose drug prohibiton. The party shared the political leftist values of the Greens but with a greather emphasis on marijuana/hemp legalization issues. The Grassroots Party fielded their first Presidential nominee -- Dennis Peron -- in 1996 (5,400 votes). In 1996, the GRP won permanent "major party" ballot status in Vermont. The Vermont affiliate was initially more libertarian and "states rights" oriented in philosophy than its leftist sister party in Minnesota. The Grassroots Party 2000 Presidential nominee Denny Lane, came from this more liberal-libertarian wing of the party. (on the ballot in only one state and captured just 1,044 votes - 12th place - 0.001%). Starting in 1996 most members of the Minnesota chapter moved into the Green Party and the Grassroots Party of Minnesota became defunct by 2002. The Grassroots Party of Vermont http://www.vtgrassrootsparty.org/ is still around, and retains a leftist bent to it after many of its libertarian leaning members moved to the Vermont Libertarian Party http://lp.org and no other chapters of the Grassroots Party exist. Since 1996, most Minnesota GRP activists joined with the state Green Party http://www.mngreens.org/. In 2002 the Minnesota Grassroots party became the Liberal Party of Minnesota http://www.geocities.com/liberalpartymn/.
