Militsiya
Militsiya (Russian: мили́ция; Ukrainian: міліція), was a name of police used in Soviet Union and few other Communist countries. Now it is the name for police in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and some other post-Soviet states. For the origin of this term, see militia. It is usually subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Locally, militsiya is subordinated to local Departments of Internal Affairs (ОВД, Отдел Внутренних Дел).
The slang synonyms for militsiya are menty (singular: ment, мент) and musora (singular: musor, мусор). Although the latter word is offensive (it means "trash", "garbage"), it originated from an acronym for Moscow Criminal Investigations department (МУС, Московский уголовный сыск) in Imperial Russia.
