As of 2000, the population is 341,367. The county seat is Goshen. The name is in honor of William, Prince of Orange, who was greatly esteemed by the original settlers of the region. History In 1683, New York State established its first twelve counties. Orange County was one of them. Its boundaries at that time included the present Rockland County. In 1798, Rockland County was split from Orange County. Geography Orange County is in southeastern New York State, directly north of the New Jersey-New York border, west of the Hudson River, and northwest of New York City. Orange County borders Sullivan County, New York, Ulster County, New York, and Rockland County, New York. Much of Orange County is made up of the Shawangunk Ridge. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,172 km² (839 mi²). 2,114 km² (816 mi²) of it is land and 58 km² (22 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.65% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 341,367 people, 114,788 households, and 84,483 families residing in the county. The population density is 161/km² (418/mi²). There are 122,754 housing units at an average density of 58/km² (150/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.70% White, 8.09% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 1.51% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 4.09% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. 11.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 114,788 households out of which 39.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 21.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.35. In the county the population is spread out with 29.00% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 100.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $52,058, and the median income for a family is $60,355. Males have a median income of $42,363 versus $30,821 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,597. 10.50% of the population and 7.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.80% of those under the age of 18 and 8.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
